Proverbs 3:5-7  An Unbeatable Combination!

A father was seeking direction concerning the education of his daughter.  Jerome wrote back: “Let her have the Psalms for a holy heart and the Proverbs for a prudent walk.”

Psalms and Proverbs are right next to each other in our English Bible and in the right order, reminding us that we should ever be turning “from the devotional passion of Psalms to the practical wisdom of Proverbs.”

Psalms teaches us how to wait on the Lord; Proverbs, how to walk before men.  The former produces holiness of heart; the latter firmness of foot.  A holy heart and a worthy walk – what an unbeatable combination!  Never separate the two. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

I’m reminded of the prayer of a great old Methodist evangelist, Sam Chadwick.  He said: “Lord, make me intensely spiritual and completely practical and thoroughly natural.”
